ISO 10254:2016 defines the terms relating to air cargo and aircraft ground equipment, as used in the other International Standards in these areas. NOTE The term "weight" is used throughout ISO 10254:2016 instead of the correct technical term "mass", in order to conform to current commercial usage. The terms and abridged definitions of ISO 10254:2016 are primarily intended to provide uniform understanding of the International Standards prepared by TC20/SC9. However, it is intended that they be used in any other documents, manuals and standards in the areas of air cargo and airport ground equipment. More detailed definitions are provided when needed in the "Terms and definitions" clause of the specific International Standards prepared by TC20/SC9. The terms are listed in alphabetic sequence in the English language version. An index allows the identification of terms from their French or German expressions.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 10254:2016 - "Air cargo and ground equipment - Vocabulary" is an International Standard from ISO/TC 20/SC 9 that defines the terms and abridged definitions used in the air cargo and aircraft ground equipment domain. The second edition (2016) replaces ISO 10254:1995, expands the content and provides a trilingual (English/French/German) reference. Terms are listed alphabetically in the English text, with an index to identify equivalent French and German expressions. A notable editorial point: the standard uses the commercial term “weight” throughout instead of the technically correct term “mass” to align with common industry usage.
Key topics
ISO 10254:2016 focuses on standardized terminology to ensure uniform understanding across related standards and documents. Key topic areas include:
- Core concepts for air cargo operations (cargo, freight, baggage, mail)
- Aircraft types and configurations relevant to cargo handling (all‑cargo aircraft, freighter, combi, convertible, quick‑change, passenger aircraft, regional and main‑line aircraft)
- Aircraft structure terms used in cargo context (deck, lower deck, main deck, upper deck)
- Scope and usage guidance - primary intent is to support other TC20/SC9 International Standards; terms may also be used in manuals, contracts and regulatory documents
- Multilingual indexing - English alphabetical listing with French/German cross‑references for international application
(ISO 10254 provides abridged definitions; where more detail is required, specific TC20/SC9 standards contain expanded “Terms and definitions” clauses.)
Practical applications
ISO 10254:2016 is a foundational reference that helps remove ambiguity and improve consistency across:
- Standards and technical specifications (air cargo handling, ground support equipment)
- Airline and ground handling operations manuals and SOPs
- Procurement documents and equipment specifications for ground support manufacturers
- Regulatory guidance, compliance documents and training materials
- Translation and localization of technical documentation (via French/German index)
Standardized vocabulary supports safer, more efficient air cargo operations, clearer contracts, and interoperable ground equipment requirements.
Who should use it
- Airlines and cargo operators
- Airport ground handling organizations
- Ground support equipment (GSE) manufacturers and suppliers
- Regulators and civil aviation authorities
- Standards writers, technical authors and translators
- Training organizations developing operational curricula
Related standards
ISO 10254:2016 is intended to be used in conjunction with other ISO and TC20/SC9 standards covering specific technical and operational requirements for air cargo and aircraft ground equipment. For detailed definitions applicable to a particular technical topic, consult the relevant TC20/SC9 International Standard.
