Scope: Applies to semi-finished lens blanks with finished progressive or degressive surfaces; tolerances are defined at 23 °C ± 5 °C.
Optical tolerances: Surface power and surface cylindrical power tolerances are specified in dioptres and expressed in the refractive index of the lens material. Typical ranges include:
- Surface power tolerance: for surface power ≥0.00 and ≤10.00 D → ±0.09 D; >10.00 and ≤15.00 D → ±0.12 D.
- Surface addition power (progressive blanks): ≤4.00 D → ±0.12 D; >4.00 D → ±0.18 D.
Geometrical tolerances: Definitions and limits for nominal, effective and usable sizes (e.g., effective size within d_n −1 mm to d_n +2 mm; usable size limits vary with nominal size). Centre and edge thickness shall not be less than manufacturer’s minimum and shall not exceed it by more than 3 mm. Polarizing blanks require polarizing-plane alignment to permanent marks (90° ± 3°).
Test methods: Surface power and addition measured by reflection using instruments appropriate to the tolerances; recommended measurement aperture 4–8 mm. Annexes cover material/surface quality inspection (Annex A), refractive-index conversion for instruments (Annex B) and addition measurement by transmission/focimeter alternative (Annex C).
Marking & packaging: Mandatory permanent marks on the finished surface (alignment references 34 mm apart, addition indication for progressive blanks, manufacturer ID). Package labeling must include nominal surface power, nominal cylinder and nominal size.
