Overview
ISO 10417:2004 - "Petroleum and natural gas industries - Subsurface safety valve systems - Design, installation, operation and redress" - defines requirements and provides guidance for the configuration, selection, installation, testing, operation, documentation, storage/transport, handling and redress of subsurface safety valve (SSSV) systems and associated downhole production equipment. The standard addresses both surface-controlled subsurface safety valves (SCSSV) and subsurface-controlled subsurface safety valves (SSCSV) and specifies system-level considerations for preventing uncontrolled well flow. ISO 10417:2004 is not applicable to repair activities (see ISO 10432 for repair requirements).
Key topics and technical requirements
- System configuration and compatibility: Requirements for control systems, control lines, wellhead/tubing hanger interfaces, valve landing nipples, lock mandrels and related components.
- Equipment selection and handling: Guidance for selecting SSSV equipment, packaging, transport and storage to avoid damage or contamination.
- Installation and commissioning: Procedures and acceptance criteria for installation and installation testing, to be performed by qualified personnel using documented methods and manufacturer manuals.
- Operation and testing: Operational guidance, periodic testing procedures and documentation requirements to ensure reliable actuation and safe shutdown behavior.
- Redress and qualified parts: Defines “redress” (replacement of qualified parts within defined limits), plus minimum data requirements for redress reports (Annex A). Repair activities beyond redress are excluded.
- Sizing and application: Informative annexes covering sizing of SSCSVs (velocity- and tubing-pressure-type devices) and application to single/multiple completions.
- Failure reporting and traceability: Normative requirements for failure reporting and minimum information to be recorded (Annex F).
- Supporting materials: Informative annexes for installation (B), operations (C), sizing (D), testing procedures (E) and a redress report template (A).
Practical applications
ISO 10417 provides the technical baseline for:
- Designing SSSV systems for production wells and subsea installations.
- Establishing installation, commissioning and testing procedures for completion crews.
- Preparing operational and maintenance manuals, test records and redress documentation.
- Defining procurement and acceptance criteria for manufacturers, suppliers and service companies.
- Supporting HSE and emergency shutdown (ESD) planning by ensuring valve reliability and documented testing.
Who should use this standard
- Completion and production engineers in the oil & gas industry
- Equipment manufacturers and suppliers of SSSV systems
- Well services and wireline contractors
- Quality assurance, inspection and HSE personnel
- Offshore and subsea installation teams
