The objective of this document is to define a test method to determine the light reflectance value (LRV) of ceramic tiles, including mosaic tiles. It is applicable to solid-coloured, multicoloured and non-uniform shade tile surfaces including tile with flame effects, speckled or textured with different types of finishing.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 10545-18:2022 specifies a standardized test method for determining the light reflectance value (LRV) of ceramic tiles, including both standard and mosaic formats. The standard applies to tiles of various surface types - solid-coloured, multi-coloured, and those with non-uniform shades, speckled, flame-effect, or textured finishes. Accurate measurement of LRV is essential for assessing how much visible light a tile surface reflects, which impacts not just design aesthetics but also functional requirements such as accessibility and safety.
Key Topics
- Light Reflectance Value (LRV)
- LRV is defined as the percentage of visible light reflected by a ceramic tile surface, measured using specified conditions reflecting standard human visual perception.
- Applicability
- The standard applies to ceramic tiles with uniform colours as well as complex surfaces, including those featuring varied shades, textures, or speckles.
- Specimen Preparation
- Detailed guidance on selecting and preparing test specimens ensures representation across the full chromatic and surface variability characteristic of the tile batch.
- Minimum sample sizes and measurement points are established for different tile formats and sizes.
- Test Methodology
- Measurement utilizes calibrated reflectance-type spectrophotometers or colorimeters compliant with recognized international color measurement conditions (CIE standards).
- Specific testing procedures are set for solid, multi-coloured, and non-uniform surfaces.
- Measurements can be conducted on both dry and wet surfaces, depending on end-use scenarios.
- Test Reporting
- The standard outlines all information required in the test report, ensuring traceability and comparability.
Applications
ISO 10545-18:2022 provides significant practical value across a variety of fields:
- Architectural Design and Interior Decoration
- Ensures tiles meet desired visual and lighting effects in both residential and commercial buildings.
- Accessibility Compliance
- Facilitates compliance with regulations requiring defined LRV contrasts for spaces accessible to people with visual impairments.
- Safety and Wayfinding
- Supports tile selection where clear demarcation and visibility are necessary, such as in public buildings, transit hubs, and healthcare environments.
- Quality Assurance
- Enables manufacturers, quality inspectors, and third-party laboratories to objectively verify tile batch consistency and specification to customer or regulatory requirements.
- Product Marketing and Specification
- Offers reliable LRV data for inclusion in technical datasheets, assisting designers and specifiers in the selection of suitable flooring and wall covering products.
- Heritage and Restoration Projects
- Ensures that replacement or reproduction tiles reflect or match the LRV of original materials, preserving building aesthetics and lighting character.
Related Standards
Several standards complement or are related to ISO 10545-18:2022, either by extending the scope of ceramic tile testing or through foundational definitions in colorimetry:
- ISO 10545 Series - A comprehensive suite of standards for testing physical and chemical properties of ceramic tiles.
- ISO/CIE 11664-1:2019 - Colorimetry - CIE standard colorimetric observers.
- ISO/CIE 11664-3:2019 - Colorimetry - CIE tristimulus values.
- CIE 130:1998 - Practical methods for the measurement of reflectance and transmittance.
- ISO 105-J03:2009 - Textiles - Tests for colour fastness - Part J03: Calculation of colour differences.
ISO 10545-18:2022 is essential for ensuring accurate and consistent measurement of light reflectance in ceramic tiles, contributing to safer, more inclusive, and visually effective built environments.
