This document specifies the requirements for the design, installation and testing of engine-mounted and craft-mounted remote hydraulic steering systems used with single and multiple engine installations of outboard engines over 15 kW per engine, as well as with single and multiple engines of inboard, sterndrive, and water jet drives, all used on small craft. This document does not address emergency means of steering the craft.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 10592:2022 - Small craft - Remote hydraulic steering systems specifies design, installation and testing requirements for remote hydraulic steering systems used on small craft. It applies to engine‑mounted and craft‑mounted systems for outboard engines over 15 kW per engine and to inboard, sterndrive and water‑jet drives in single and multiple engine installations. The standard covers component selection, system pressures, mechanical interfaces and verification testing. It does not address emergency steering means.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and definitions - Clarifies terms such as hydraulic helm, output device, system torque, system design peak pressure and minimum retained system performance (e.g., ≥90% travel attainable with ≤27 Nm helm torque after tests).
- Design and installation - The craft manufacturer must install complete systems from control element to the appropriate output/connection points; threaded fasteners that could cause total loss of steering must be locked or otherwise secured; simple spring‑only quick‑disconnects are not permitted.
- Materials and environmental limits - Components must operate between −20 °C and +80 °C and withstand storage between −40 °C and +85 °C.
- Hydraulic component ratings - All parts (helms, lines, fittings, cylinders) must be marked and have component proof pressure at least equal to the helm’s system proof pressure. Component burst pressure must be at least the system design peak pressure or twice the component proof pressure, whichever is greater.
- Safety and connection integrity - Hydraulic quick‑connects that affect steering integrity must provide a two‑stage integral locking mechanism.
- Testing requirements - Includes installed proof tests, system application tests and component tests. Example requirements: impulse load sequence using system design peak pressure followed by half that pressure for ≥0.5 s; load applied within 13° of centre; system movement limited (≤17°) after relief events.
Practical applications - who uses ISO 10592:2022
- Boat and small craft manufacturers - to specify and install compliant steering systems during construction.
- Steering system and component manufacturers - to design helms, cylinders, lines and fittings that meet proof/burst pressure and temperature requirements.
- Marine installers and service technicians - to perform correct installation, secure fasteners and validate connections.
- Surveyors, test labs and regulators - to verify compliance through the prescribed tests and documentation.
- Naval architects and system integrators - for selecting steering architectures and ensuring safe interfaces for single and multiple engine installations.
