ISO 10619-3:2011 specifies a method for the determination of the bending characteristics of rubber and plastics hoses and tubing, including the force required for bending, over a range of temperatures from -60 ºC to +200 ºC. The nature of the apparatus, however, limits its applicability to rubber and plastics hoses and tubing of small internal diameter, i.e. up to 12,5 mm.

Test apparatus

Compression testing machine with a mobile jaw travel speed of 100 mm/min (ideally with a recorder).
Twin “gutter” supports with end stops and a temperature-controlled (thermostatted) enclosure that allows measurement access.

Specimen preparation and conditioning

Tests performed not less than 24 hours after manufacture; conditioning in the thermostat for 5 hours at the test temperature (in unbent or natural curvature).
Conditioning of the test apparatus to the same temperature as specimens for elevated-temperature tests.

Test procedure

Install two matched specimens per series; perform typically three series (each series = two specimens).
Measure unbent outer diameter D (three readings averaged) and measure the minimum outer diameter T at the bent region (six readings averaged).
Apply bending force, determine force to reach the specified minimum curvature (twice the minimum radius), divide recorded force by two to obtain single-specimen bending force.

Results and reporting

Calculate T/D and compare with allowable deformation specified for the hose.
Test report must reference ISO 10619-3:2011 and include method details, specimen description, temperature, observations, D, T, T/D, bending force (if applicable), and test date.
