This document specifies the system of colour coding for flow rate identification of nozzles used on sprayers. It is applicable to hydraulic energy nozzles such as flat and cone nozzles used for the application of crop protection products. This document is not applicable to adjustable nozzles. It allows for flow recognition on small parts in order to avoid any confusion under normal conditions of use.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 10625:2018 - Equipment for crop protection - Sprayer nozzles - Colour coding for identification defines a standardized colour coding system for identifying nozzle flow rates used on agricultural sprayers. The standard applies to hydraulic nozzles (for example flat-fan and cone/turbulence nozzles) used in the application of crop protection products. It is not applicable to adjustable nozzles. Colours are specified to permit quick flow recognition on small parts and to avoid confusion under normal conditions of use.
Key topics and requirements
- Flow-based colour coding: Nozzle colours correspond to specific flow rates measured at a service pressure of 300 kPa (the reference used for ISO 5682-1 tests).
- Two tables of colours:
- Table 1 covers low-flow nozzles (below 7.9 l/min) with flows from 0.2 to 7.2 l/min and assigned RAL colour references (e.g., 0.2 l/min = lilac blue 4005-P; 1.4 l/min = red-purple 3004-P).
- Table 2 covers high-flow nozzles (greater than 8 l/min) with flows from 8.0 to 32.0 l/min and assigned RAL colour references (e.g., 8.0 l/min = graphite black 9011-P; 32.0 l/min = orange 2004-P).
- Tolerance: Flow values are given with a relative tolerance of ±5%.
- Material requirement: For plastic nozzles the material should be uniformly pigmented in the mass so colour remains durable and identifiable.
- Colour references: Colours are specified with RAL codes for consistency; electronic representations are not guaranteed to exactly match physical colours.
Applications and users
Who benefits from implementing ISO 10625:2018:
- Manufacturers of agricultural sprayer nozzles and spray equipment - to mark nozzles consistently for global markets.
- Farmers and spray operators - for rapid field identification of nozzle flow rates to ensure correct application rates.
- Service technicians and calibration teams - to speed nozzle selection and reduce nozzle-matching errors during calibration and maintenance.
- Distributors, retailers and regulatory bodies - to standardize product labelling, improve traceability and support compliance with spray application best practices. Practical benefits include improved spray accuracy, reduced drift and overdosing risk, simplified inventory management, and easier cross-brand nozzle substitution.
Related standards
- ISO 5682-1 - referenced for nozzle test methods and the 300 kPa test condition used in ISO 10625.
- ISO 10625:2018 supersedes ISO 10625:2005 and includes updated flow ranges and colour assignments.
