Overview
ISO 10649-2:2013 specifies the dimensions and designation of cutter arbors (tool holders) with a parallel key and tenon drive that use a hollow taper (HSK) interface with a flange contact surface. The standard defines geometry, material requirements, marking rules and delivery items to ensure interchangeability, safe tool clamping and collision avoidance when changing assembled tools in machine tools.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope: Applies to cutter arbors with parallel key and tenon drive and HSK (hollow-shank taper) interface with flange contact.
- Dimensional data: Provides dimensional specifications (nominal HSK sizes 32, 40, 50, 63, 80, 100 and associated diameters and functional lengths) in millimetres; detailed values are given in Figure 1 and Table 1 of the standard.
- Tolerances: Unspecified tolerances follow ISO 2768 - linear/angular tolerances class m and geometric tolerances class K.
- Material and hardness: Manufacturer chooses material; tensile strength must be at least 800 N/mm². Surface hardness at the taper and centring surfaces is specified as (56 +4) HRC (per the document); depth of hardening is manufacturer-determined.
- Designation format: Standardized naming - e.g. “Mandrin ISO 10649-2 - HSK - A40 - 16” (indicating part, HSK type A or C, nominal HSK size and cutter diameter).
- Delivery items: Mandrins must be supplied with at least the parallel key, drive sleeve and cutter locking screw conforming to ISO 10643.
- Informative mapping: Annex A maps ISO 10649-2 designations to preferred symbols in the ISO 13399 tooling data series for digital data exchange.
Applications and users
- Who uses it:
- Tool-holder and cutter arbor manufacturers
- Machine tool builders and OEMs
- Tooling engineers and CAM programmers
- Procurement and quality/inspection teams
- Practical uses:
- Ensuring mechanical interchangeability of HSK tool holders across machines
- Designing arbors that meet specified clamping/contact geometry to prevent collisions during automatic tool changes
- Specifying procurement requirements and acceptance criteria for tool holders and accessories
- Mapping tooling data into digital tool libraries using ISO 13399-compatible identifiers
