ISO 1071:2015 specifies requirements for classification of covered electrodes for manual metal arc welding, wire electrodes for metal arc welding, tubular cored electrodes for metal arc welding with and without a gas shield, rods for TIG-welding, and rods for oxy-fuel gas welding of unalloyed cast irons. Classification is based on the chemical composition of wires and rods and on the all-weld metal deposit for tubular cored and covered electrodes.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 1071:2015 - "Welding consumables - Covered electrodes, wires, rods and tubular cored electrodes for fusion welding of cast iron - Classification" - defines a standardized classification system for welding consumables used to fuse unalloyed cast irons. The standard covers covered electrodes (manual metal arc), solid wires and rods (metal arc, TIG, oxy-fuel), and tubular cored electrodes (with or without shielding gas). Classification is based on chemical composition of wires/rods and on the all‑weld metal produced by covered and tubular cored electrodes.
Keywords: ISO 1071:2015, welding consumables, cast iron, covered electrodes, tubular cored electrodes, wires and rods, classification.
Key topics and requirements
- Product symbols and forms: Single-letter codes identify product form (E = covered electrode, S = solid wire/rod, T = tubular cored wire, R = cast rod) and alloy type (C = cast iron).
- Classification basis:
- Solid wires and rods are classified by chemical composition.
- Tubular cored and covered electrodes are classified by the chemical composition of the all‑weld metal they produce.
- Similar vs dissimilar weld metal: Consumables are grouped into those producing weld metal similar to parent cast iron (requiring high preheat) and those producing dissimilar weld metal (low or no preheat).
- Shielding gas notation: Shielding gases follow ISO 14175 symbols; non‑gas shielded tubular cored electrodes use the symbol NO.
- Covered electrode details: Classification assumes a 4 mm electrode diameter and includes symbols for effective electrode efficiency and allowable current types.
- Testing and quality requirements: Includes provisions for mechanical tests, chemical analysis, rounding procedures, retests, technical delivery conditions and designation (see clauses 5–10).
Applications and users
ISO 1071:2015 is practical for:
- Welding consumable manufacturers (classification and labeling)
- Welding engineers and designers selecting filler materials for cast iron fusion welding
- Foundries and fabricators performing production welding, repair welding, and cast-iron construction joins
- Quality managers and procurement professionals verifying compliance and traceability
Typical applications include production welding of castings, repair of service-damaged cast parts, and joining cast iron to other ferrous/non‑ferrous metals.
