This document specifies a method to determine the susceptibility of textile floor coverings to mechanical damage at cut edges. It is applicable to textile floor coverings both as broadloom materials and as tiles and planks.

Scope and purpose: Method for evaluating mechanical damage at cut edges of textile floor coverings (broadloom, tiles, planks).
Apparatus:
- Vettermann-drum tester conforming to ISO 10361 with an integrated vacuum (no brushing device); nozzle air flow minimum 25 l/s and nozzle must not touch the sample.
- Stainless steel ball fitted with six rubber studs; mass without studs (7 000 ± 100) g, diameter (120 ± 0.2) mm.
- Replace rubber studs before each test; external vacuum cleaner (no brush) for cleaning after test.
Specimen sampling and preparation:
- Broadloom: four specimens ~570 mm × 265 mm; a central cut is made in the pile direction, stopping 20 mm before one end; edges taped on the back with 50 mm single-sided tape.
- Tiles/planks: take at least four tiles (500×500 mm or not smaller than 265×265 mm); cut into eight specimens ~132 mm wide (four in manufacture direction, four crosswise); assemble so original edges form the stressed joint.
- Use single- and, if necessary, double-sided 50 mm adhesive tape to secure edges and prevent fraying.
Conditioning and test procedure:
- Condition specimens face-up in standard textile atmosphere per ISO 139 for at least 24 h.
- Insert specimens in drum, place the ball, set revolutions to 11 000 cycles, run with vacuum operating continuously.
- After testing, vacuum-clean specimens with four passes each direction; assess appearance.
Assessment and reporting:
- Evaluate for fraying, delamination, tuft out, laddering/shooting and newly defined filamentation (hairiness not removable by brushing/suction).
- Include test conditions, specimen orientation, vacuum use and results in the test report.
