This document specifies requirements for the design, manufacture and marking of offshore containers with a maximum gross mass not exceeding 25 000 kg, intended for repeated use to, from and between offshore installations and ships. This document specifies only transport-related requirements.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 10855-1:2024 - Offshore containers and associated lifting sets (Part 1) defines requirements for the design, manufacture and marking of offshore containers with a maximum gross mass up to 25 000 kg. The standard applies to containers intended for repeated transport to, from and between offshore installations and ships and covers transport-related requirements only. It focuses on safe, repeatable use in marine and offshore logistics, ensuring containers meet minimum structural, material and testing criteria before entering service.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and limits: Applies to offshore containers ≤ 25 000 kg, transport-related aspects only.
- Design and structural strength: Requirements for primary structure, lifting loads, impact loads, internal forces, minimum material thickness and corner fittings to resist offshore handling stresses.
- Detailed components: Guidance for floors, doors/hatches, intermediate decks, driving ramps, forklift pockets, pad eyes, top protection and internal lashing points.
- Materials and fabrication: Specified materials classes (rolled/extruded steels, stainless steel, aluminium, non-metallics), welding requirements, coatings and corrosion protection appropriate for marine exposure.
- Container types: Special considerations for tank containers (frames, tanks for fluids, impact protection) and containers for bulk solids.
- Type and production testing: Mandatory type testing (lifting tests - all‑point and two‑point, vertical impact tests), test equipment calibration, production lifting tests, weatherproofness testing and procedures for failure handling.
- Marking and documentation: Safety marking, identification and information markings, detailed requirements for the container data plate, and contents of the certificate of conformity.
- Quality control: Approved welders, weld examination, production controls and documentation requirements.
Applications and who uses this standard
ISO 10855-1:2024 is primarily used by:
- Container designers and manufacturers producing offshore cargo containers and associated lifting interfaces.
- Offshore operators, shipping companies and rig owners specifying safe transportable units for platform-to-ship logistics.
- Inspection bodies, certification agencies and Class societies conducting type tests, production audits and issuing certificates of conformity.
- Procurement, safety and asset management teams setting acceptance criteria for offshore logistics equipment.
- Shipyards and marine contractors integrating containerised equipment into offshore operations.
Practical benefits include improved safety in lifting and transport operations, consistent marking and traceability, and reduced downtime from container failures.
Related standards
ISO 10855-1:2024 should be used alongside other relevant marine, lifting and material standards (e.g., ISO standards addressing lifting equipment, welding, materials and corrosion protection) and applicable national or industry offshore transport regulations to ensure comprehensive compliance.
