ISO 10893-10:2011 specifies requirements for automated full peripheral ultrasonic shear wave (generated by conventional or phased array technique) testing of seamless and welded [except submerged arc-welded (SAW)] steel tubes, for the detection of longitudinal and/or transverse imperfections. In the case of testing on longitudinal imperfections, Lamb wave testing can be applied at the discretion of the manufacturer. For seamless tubes, by agreement between the purchaser and manufacturer, testing principles of ISO 10893-10:2011 can be applied to detect imperfections having other orientations. ISO 10893-10:2011 is applicable to the inspection of tubes with an outside diameter greater than or equal to 10 mm, normally with an outside diameter-to-thickness ratio greater than or equal to 5. It can also be applicable to the testing of circular hollow sections.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 10893-10:2011 defines requirements for automated, full-peripheral ultrasonic testing (UT) of seamless and welded steel tubes (excluding submerged arc-welded - SAW) to detect longitudinal and/or transverse imperfections. The standard covers shear-wave UT (conventional or phased-array) and allows Lamb wave testing for longitudinal defects at the manufacturer's discretion. It is applicable to tubes with outside diameter ≥ 10 mm (normally with OD-to-thickness ratio ≥ 5) and can be used for circular hollow sections.
Keywords: ISO 10893-10:2011, non-destructive testing, ultrasonic testing, shear wave, phased array, Lamb wave, steel tubes, longitudinal defects, transverse defects.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Test method: Automated full peripheral scanning using ultrasonic shear waves; Lamb waves permitted for longitudinal inspection. Scans must cover the whole tube surface with controlled relative movement (speed variation ±10%).
- Probe/array requirements: Limits on transducer/active aperture widths (typical maxima: 25 mm; up to 35 mm for Lamb or phased-array use). Frequency ranges: shear-wave transducers 1–15 MHz; Lamb wave 0.3–1 MHz (dependent on tube condition and thickness).
- Direction of testing: Typically two opposite sound propagation directions (clockwise/anticlockwise for longitudinal; forward/backward for transverse).
- Calibration & reference tubes: Use reference tubes with calibrated notches (N- or V-type) matching nominal diameter, thickness, surface finish and acoustic properties of production tubes. Notch dimensions and acceptance-level criteria are specified; internal notches may be waived for very small internal diameters.
- Equipment capability: Systems must classify tubes as acceptable or suspect using automated trigger/alarm levels and provide marking/sorting.
- Personnel & timing: Testing performed after primary production operations. Operators must be qualified per ISO 9712, ISO 11484 or equivalent; NDT level‑3 oversight and employer authorization required.
- Ancillary requirements: Addresses untested ends and special cases (Annex B) and testing for low OD-to-thickness ratios (Annex A).
Applications
- Routine quality control and final inspection of seamless and welded steel tubes used in pressure systems, structural applications, pipelines, and general manufacturing.
- Inline automated inspection in tube mills and finishing lines for early detection of longitudinal and transverse imperfections, reducing rework and ensuring product conformity.
- Acceptance testing for purchaser-specified inspection levels and for suppliers demonstrating compliance with NDT requirements.
Who should use this standard
- Tube manufacturers and quality managers
- NDT technicians and Level 3 supervisors
- Inspection/third-party testing organizations
