ISO 10893-2:2011 specifies requirements for automated eddy current testing of seamless and welded tubes with the exception of submerged arc-welded (SAW) tubes, for the detection of imperfections according to the different acceptance levels. It is applicable to the inspection of tubes with an outside diameter greater than or equal to 4 mm. It can also be applicable to the testing of hollow sections.
Abstract
Overview - ISO 10893-2:2011 (Automated eddy current testing)
ISO 10893-2:2011 is an international standard that specifies requirements for automated eddy current testing of seamless and welded (except submerged arc-welded) steel tubes to detect imperfections. It applies to tubes with an outside diameter ≥ 4 mm and can also be applied to hollow sections. The standard covers test techniques, equipment, calibration with reference tubes, operator qualifications and acceptance/reporting requirements for routine production inspection.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope & timing: Inspection is normally performed after completion of production operations (rolling, heat treatment, forming, straightening, etc.). Tubes must be sufficiently straight with clean surfaces for valid testing.
- Test techniques: Recognized automated/semi-automated techniques include:
- Concentric coil (full peripheral) - limited to ø180 mm (ø250 mm for E4H).
- Fixed or rotating probe / pancake coil (full peripheral) - no maximum diameter restriction; primarily detects external surface-breaking defects.
- Segment coil - used for weld-seam inspection or full-body scanning (limits: ø219.1 mm for 2×180° coils, ø508.0 mm for 4×100° coils).
- Operating parameters: Relative speed during scanning shall not vary by more than ±10 %.
- Reference tubes & calibration: Calibration uses reference tubes or samples with drilled holes or notches. Reference tubes should match diameter, wall, surface finish and delivery condition of production tubes; specific reference arrangements are defined for each technique.
- Equipment features: Automated classification (acceptable/suspect), triggers/alarms and marking/sorting systems are required.
- Personnel: Operators must be qualified per ISO 9712, ISO 11484 or equivalent; NDT operations authorized by a Level 3 individual.
- Limitations: Annex A provides guidance on eddy current limitations (e.g., sensitivity decreases with depth; technique-specific limits).
Practical applications
- Inline quality control on tube production lines (seamless and welded, excluding SAW).
- Routine inspection of structural, mechanical and pressure-component tubes where detection of surface and near-surface imperfections is required.
- Pre-shipment acceptance testing and sorting of suspect lengths for repair or rejection.
- Integration into automated mills, testing stations and third-party NDT services.
