Overview
ISO 10984-1:2009 - Timber structures - Dowel-type fasteners - Part 1: Determination of yield moment specifies a laboratory method for measuring the yield moment of dowel-type fasteners used in timber structures. The standard defines test principles, specimen preparation, apparatus, loading procedures and reporting requirements. - Specimen preparation: Test about the weakest axis; remove coatings before measuring shank diameter.
- Accuracy and measurement:
- Load measured to 1% accuracy.
- Method B deformation measured to 0.03 mm accuracy.
- Loading rates: Method A - bending angle reached in (10 ± 5) s; Method B - max load reached in about 30 s with continuous monitoring.
- Yield moment calculation:
- Method A - yield moment M is calculated from measured support loads and lever arms (the larger of the relevant F × l expressions); Annex A provides an alternative apparatus and formulas.
- Method B - M = Fy × (l/4), where Fy is the offset yield load and l is span between supports.
- Test report: Must include laboratory ID, test date, reference to ISO 10984-1, fastener description, apparatus details, loading rate, free-length location, number of replicates, test curves/graphs and the reported yield moment.
