ISO 11054:2006 specifies the designation of groups of high-speed steels used for manufacturing high-speed steel (HSS) cutting tools such as taps, drills and end mills. It is not intended to specify the composition of high-speed steels, which is the subject of ISO 4957.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 11054:2006 defines the designation of high-speed steel (HSS) groups used for manufacturing cutting tools such as taps, drills and end mills. The standard specifies group codes (for example HSS, HSS-E, HSS-PM, HSS-E-PM) to indicate production method and key alloy-class thresholds. ISO 11054:2006 addresses classification and labelling only - it does not specify chemical compositions (see ISO 4957 for composition and grade details).
Key topics
- Scope and purpose: Standardizes group-level designation for HSS cutting-tool materials to support clear product identification and procurement.
- Terms and definitions: Distinguishes conventional high-speed steel (ingot metallurgy) and powder metallurgy high-speed steel (PM process).
- Designation rules: Groups are assigned codes based on production process and alloy class thresholds:
- HSS - conventional HSS with
