Deals with the testing of paints, varnishes and related products. Specifies a test method for determining under standard conditions the resistance of a single coat or a multi-coat system of paint or related material in intermittent water condensation.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 11503:1995 - Paints and varnishes - Determination of resistance to humidity (intermittent condensation) - specifies a standardized laboratory test method to assess how a single coat or multi-coat paint/varnish system withstands intermittent water condensation. The method exposes coated specimens in an airtight cabinet or chamber to cycles of warm, saturated air that produces condensation followed by a cooler, drier period. The standard is intended for quality control, comparative laboratory checks and routine testing rather than as a definitive predictor of in-service performance.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Test principle: Specimens experience repeated condensation by maintaining the chamber at about 40 ± 3 °C and 98–100% relative humidity (condensation period), then cycling to 23 ± 5 °C and 50 ± 20% RH (dry period).
- Standard cycle: Default cycle is 16 hours condensation + 8 hours dry, repeated for the agreed number of cycles.
- Apparatus: Airtight cabinet (≈300 L) or larger chamber with a watertight trough (water depth ≥ 10 mm), heated water tank, thermostat and specimen suspension/support to avoid dripping onto lower panels.
- Specimens: Non‑porous panels (≈150×100 mm) or porous substrates (e.g., fibre‑cement ~300×200×4 mm) prepared and coated per ISO 1514/1513. Back and edges are normally coated unless otherwise agreed.
- Water: Use Grade 2 analytical water (ISO 3696); maintain water-level and renew water if contaminated.
- Examination and reporting: Inspect for blistering (ISO 4628-2), adhesion loss, softening, color change, rust staining, etc., typically 5–10 minutes after removal. Report coating thickness (ISO 2808), number of cycles, any deviations and all supplementary information from Annex A.
- Precision & limitations: The standard notes there is seldom a direct relationship between this lab test and real‑world deterioration; results are useful for quality control and comparative checks only.
Applications and users
ISO 11503 is used by:
- Paint and varnish manufacturers for batch quality control and R&D.
- Independent testing laboratories performing standardized humidity/condensation resistance tests.
- Specification writers, asset owners and contractors who require documented environmental resistance testing for coatings.
- Certification bodies and auditors assessing conformity to product specifications.
Practical benefits include consistent lab evaluation of condensation resistance, standardized reporting, and a reproducible method for comparing formulations and application systems.
