Overview
ISO 11783-5:2019 - part of the ISO 11783 series for tractors and machinery for agriculture and forestry - defines network management for the on-board serial control and communications data network. The standard specifies how electronic control units (ECUs) and their control functions (CFs) obtain and manage source addresses (SAs), how a device’s unique 64-bit NAME is used to associate identity with function, procedures for network initialization, and detection/reporting of network-related errors. ISO 11783-5 is harmonized with SAE J1939/81 and complements other ISO 11783 parts (physical and data link layers).
Key Topics and Requirements
- Address configuration capabilities
- Non-configurable, self-configurable, service-configurable and command-configurable address types are defined and their behaviors specified.
- Self-configurable CFs must select SAs (typically in the 128–247 range) and re-calculate them on conflicts.
- NAME (64-bit identifier)
- Each CF must provide a unique 64-bit NAME that describes function and arbitration priority.
- The NAME includes fields such as the self-configurable flag, industry group, device class and identity information.
- Address-claiming and arbitration
- Procedures require CFs to claim an address before transmitting other messages; NAME and SA are transmitted in address-claim messages to associate identity and function.
- Rules govern conflict resolution (higher-priority NAME wins) and reporting when a CF cannot claim an address.
- Network initialization
- Sequences for acquiring a unique address, address claim requirements and what to do when a CF cannot obtain an address are specified.
- Network-error management
- Detection and reporting mechanisms for network-related errors and procedures for NAME management (runtime changes) are included.
Applications and Who Uses It
- OEMs and system integrators designing tractor and agricultural machinery electronics to ensure interoperable on-board networks.
- ECU manufacturers implementing CFs that need to follow address claiming and NAME rules for predictable arbitration.
- Diagnostic and service-tool vendors providing tools for service-configurable and command-configurable address operations.
- Fleet managers and technicians ensuring reliable initialization, conflict resolution and error reporting on implement/tractor networks.
- Developers implementing ISO 11783-compatible firmware stacks or gateways between ISO 11783 and SAE J1939 systems.
