ISO 12604-3:2022 - Aircraft ground handling - Checked baggage - Part 3: Workstation ergonomics - specifies ergonomic requirements for workstations used by baggage handling agents who manually process individual pieces of checked baggage in airport terminals and in the vicinity of aircraft. The standard applies to manual handling workplaces in the sorting, routing and safe‑handling chain (departure and arrival circuits, terminal and aircraft vicinity) but excludes the passenger check‑in process, loading into aircraft cargo holds and odd‑sized baggage. ISO 12604-3 focuses on workstation design and critical characteristics of manual workstations rather than baggage handling system design.

- Spatial organization: Clear pedestrian and vehicle flows, minimal obstructions, protected pedestrian corridors, temporary storage areas, and measures to reduce tripping/falling risks. Specified minimal lane widths: tractor lanes ~3.0 m, parking lanes ~2.5 m.
- Automation interaction: Automated feed rates (belts, conveyors) must allow agents to anticipate and perform safe handling gestures - belt capacity should avoid transhipments or complete system failures that force extra manual handling.
- Safety and handling aids: Use mechanical movement of carts/containers, dedicated loading/unloading equipment, and workstation layouts that reduce repetitive strain and impact/crushing hazards.
