ISO 12782-1:2012 specifies the determination of the content of "reactive" iron in the form of amorphous iron oxides and hydroxides in soil and other materials by extraction with ascorbic acid. Other materials also include waste. The content of "reactive" iron can be used as input in geochemical models to represent the content of amorphous iron (hydr)oxides.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 12782-1:2012 - Soil quality - Parameters for geochemical modelling of leaching and speciation of constituents in soils and materials - Part 1 describes a standardized laboratory method to determine the content of reactive iron in the form of amorphous iron oxides and hydroxides. The method uses an ascorbic acid extraction to mobilize short-range ordered iron (hydr)oxides from soils, soil materials and wastes. Results are intended as input parameters for geochemical modelling of leaching, speciation, mobility and bioavailability of trace elements.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope: Quantifies "reactive" iron (amorphous Fe oxides/hydroxides) to support geochemical adsorption and speciation models.
- Extraction principle: Reduction of Fe(III) to Fe(II) and complexation by ascorbate to solubilize short-range ordered iron phases.
- Analytical technique: Extracts are analysed, e.g. by ICP-AES (see ISO 11885) to measure iron concentrations.
- Sample pretreatment: Guidance on representative sampling (ISO 10381 series), minimum laboratory sample sizes (≥200 g dry for soils; ≥2 kg dry for waste), and particle size reduction (preferably ≤2 mm for soils;
