This document specifies the characteristics of polymeric composite and reinforced polymeric composite materials in the manufacture of polymeric composite railway sleepers. It is applicable to sleepers, bearers and transoms to be installed in all tracks (both heavy and urban rail) with or without ballast. NOTE In this document, the term “sleeper” refers to “sleeper, bearer and transom”.

Overview

ISO 12856-1:2022 specifies the material characteristics required for polymeric composite and reinforced polymeric composite materials used to manufacture railway sleepers, bearers and transoms. Applicable to all track types (heavy and urban rail), with or without ballast, this standard defines how materials should resist chemical, environmental and biological influences and identifies the mechanical and thermal properties relevant to safe, long-term track performance. ISO 12856-1 is the first part of the ISO 12856 series (see Related Standards).

Resistance

Environmental compatibility: Guidance on contaminants, recycled raw materials, required documentation/certificates, and obligations to demonstrate absence of hazardous substances; archival of proofs for the projected service life.

Mechanical and thermal properties: Recommended tests and methods for tensile strength/modulus, compressive and flexural properties, shear and adhesive shear strength (Annex A), fatigue, coefficient of thermal expansion, glass transition temperature, impact strength, water absorption and Vicat softening temperature. Test references include ISO 527, ISO 604, ISO 178, ISO 11359 and others.

Manufacturer / purchaser roles: Manufacturers must demonstrate material performance; purchasers may set additional limits or require independent testing.
