This document specifies requirements for electrodeposited metallic decorative coatings for automobile plastic parts, including test requirements. This document does not apply to such coatings on plastics to be used for aerospace, electronics and engineering fields other than automobile applications. This document applies to automobile plastic parts. It differs from ISO 4525, which is not applicable for engineering purposes.

Potential difference (STEP test): Multilayer nickel potential differences measured per ISO 16866. Typical ranges are given (e.g., 20–50 mV between high-activity and bright Ni; 100–200 mV between semi-bright and bright Ni; 0–30 mV between thin Ni below Cr and bright Ni).

Micropores / microcracks: Minimum counts specified (e.g., >10 pores/cm and >200 microcracks/cm) with pore-count method per ISO 1456.

Adhesion: Grinding and sawing tests per ISO 2819 with a detailed sawing procedure (saw specification, cutting angle, speed and repeatability requirements).

Stress and temperature resistance: Stress testing methods and limits in Annex A; thermal storage, shock cycles and climate stability described (Annex B).

Corrosion testing: Accelerated corrosion options (continuous or cyclic) referenced; salt spray and rating methods referenced (ISO 9227, ISO 10289).
