ISO 13215-3:2022 defines a predictive method - Misuse Mode and Effect Analysis (MMEA) - to identify, predict and quantify misuse of child restraint systems (CRS). The standard is intended for use by CRS manufacturers and safety assessors during early design and pre‑production stages to reduce misuse risk that can degrade CRS protective performance. It complements field studies and panel testing (for example, ISO 13215-1 and ISO 13215-2) to reduce incompleteness and prediction errors.

- If three or more misuse modes have RPN ≥ 12, the CRS is deemed to have failed.
- Corrective actions and reassessment: Document remedial design changes or instruction updates, then perform revised assessment and record outcomes.
- Assessment panels: Examiners should be experienced with CRS testing; involvement in panel testing and field studies is recommended.
