Overview
ISO 13254:2010 defines a standardized test method for watertightness of thermoplastics piping systems used in non-pressure applications. It applies to products fabricated from more than one piece (fabricated fittings) and to joints in assemblies of pipes and/or fittings. The method verifies leak-tightness by subjecting the test assembly to a controlled internal hydrostatic pressure and inspecting for leakage.

Key Topics
- Scope and applicability
- Test method for fabricated thermoplastic products and joints in non-pressure piping systems (e.g., soil, waste and drainage).
- Sampling procedure and number of test pieces are set by the referring standard.
- Test principle
- A test assembly (fabricated product or pipe/fitting assembly) is filled with water, bled of air, pressurized and inspected for leaks.
- Apparatus requirements
- End-sealing devices sized and restrained to avoid longitudinal forces.
- Hydrostatic pressure source capable of applying and maintaining the required pressure to ±2% (see standard).
- Bleed valve for venting air and a pressure-measuring device.
- Test conditions
- Temperature: (23 ± 5) °C using cold tap water, avoiding condensation.
- Test inclination: test pieces may be inclined up to 12° to assist air removal.
- Angular deflection: if permitted by the joint, apply the manufacturer’s maximum angular deflection during test.
- Pressure/time procedures
- Fabricated products (accelerated procedure): apply 0.5 bar for at least 1 minute.
- Assemblies of pipes/fittings: raise pressure smoothly (≤15 min) to 0.5 bar and maintain for at least 15 minutes.
- Test report content
- Must reference ISO 13254:2010 and the referring standard, identify components and diameters, record test temperature, pressure, duration, angle of deflection (if any), leakage or rupture details, appearance changes, influencing factors and test date.
Applications
- Quality assurance and type-testing of drainage, soil and waste thermoplastic systems where internal pressure is not a design condition.
- Use by manufacturers (product development, production control), third‑party test laboratories, specifiers, and certification bodies to demonstrate watertight performance of joints and fabricated fittings.
- Helpful to installers and engineers when verifying compatibility with product declarations or compliance requirements for non-pressure piping systems.
Related standards
- ISO 13254:2010 is prepared by ISO/TC 138 (Plastics pipes, fittings and valves for the transport of fluids), Subcommittee SC 1 (soil, waste and drainage). Referencing standards (e.g., product-specific test or sampling standards) will specify sampling and the number of test pieces required.
