This document specifies the procedure for measuring the capacity of a high-speed or medium-speed engine to generate vibration and the determination of the frequency limits of validity of the information quoted. The method described in this document is not suitable for low-speed engines. This document describes an engineering and not a precision method. Whether the tests are carried out on the test bed or on site will be agreed between the user and the manufacturer. This document is applicable to high-speed and medium-speed reciprocating internal combustion engines for land, rail traction and marine use; this document is not applicable to engines used to propel agricultural tractors, road vehicles and aircraft. This document can also be applied to engines used to propel road-construction and earth-moving machines, industrial trucks and for other applications with engines where no suitable International Standard exists.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 13332:2026 defines a standardized test code for the measurement of structure-borne noise (vibration) emitted from high-speed and medium-speed reciprocating internal combustion engines, taken specifically at the engine feet. Developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), this standard provides an engineering method for quantifying the vibrational capacity of these engines, including the determination of frequency limits for measurement validity. It is applicable to engines used for land, rail traction, and marine purposes, as well as other industrial applications where no suitable international standard exists. Critically, the method does not apply to low-speed engines or those used in agricultural tractors, road vehicles, or aircraft propulsion.
Key Topics
- Measurement of Structure-Borne Noise: Guidance on how to assess the vibration transmitted through engine mounts (engine feet), focusing on both translational and angular components.
- Test Scope and Applicability: Relevant for high-speed and medium-speed engines deployed in land, rail, marine, road-construction, earth-moving machines, and industrial trucks.
- Engine Mount and Installation Conditions: Specifications to ensure that test conditions closely reflect actual operating environments, including requirements for foundation stiffness and mount mass.
- Measuring Instruments: Requirements for vibration measurement systems, comprising accelerometers and data acquisition tools, aligning with other ISO standards on vibration and accuracy.
- Test Environment: Outlines suitable acoustic and meteorological conditions for valid measurements, with specific attention to the impact of installation variables.
- Uncertainty and Accuracy: The standard provides engineering-level (not precision) measurement accuracy, along with reproducibility limits depending on frequency.
- Accelerometer Positioning: Detailed recommendations and schematics for sensor placement at the engine feet to ensure reliable data capture and support valid comparative analysis.
- Reporting and Documentation: Specifies essential data to be recorded, ensuring test results are thorough and support decision-making processes.
Applications
The test code is essential for engine manufacturers, design engineers, acoustics specialists, and facility managers involved in:
- Engine Comparison: Enabling fair assessment and comparison of structure-borne noise emission profiles among different engine models or manufacturers.
- Structure-Borne Noise Control: Informing the design of engine mountings and support structures to minimize transmission of unwanted vibration into surrounding structures, vehicles, or vessels.
- Equipment Acceptance Testing: Serving as a standardized acceptance test protocol for structure-borne noise in procurement contracts or regulatory compliance.
- Facility and Vessel Integration: Supporting the integration of internal combustion engines into buildings, ships, or rail vehicles by quantifying and addressing vibration transmission.
- Industrial Equipment Design: Applicable to non-standardized engines in machines such as industrial trucks, construction, and earth-moving equipment, enhancing reliability and occupational health profiles.
Related Standards
For a thorough vibration and noise management regime, consider the following related ISO standards:
- ISO 2954: Requirements for instruments for measuring vibration severity in rotating and reciprocating machinery.
- ISO 3046-1 & ISO 3046-3: Standards detailing engine performance measurement and test methods for power, fuel, and lubrication.
- ISO 6798-1: Engineering method for the measurement of airborne noise from reciprocating internal combustion engines.
- ISO 1503: Guidance on spatial orientation and direction of movement for ergonomic requirements in measurement setup.
Practical Value
Implementing ISO 13332:2026 ensures a consistent, objective, and internationally recognized approach to measuring and reporting structure-borne engine vibration. This standard supports sound engineering decisions, optimizes facility and vehicle design, and fosters transparency between engine manufacturers and users. Its emphasis on real-world installation conditions enhances relevance and the practical mitigation of vibrational noise in diverse operational settings.
