ISO 13372:2012 defines terms used in condition monitoring and diagnostics of machines. It is intended to provide users and manufacturers of condition monitoring and diagnostics systems with a common vocabulary.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 13372:2012 - Condition monitoring and diagnostics of machines - Vocabulary - is an international vocabulary standard that defines the terms used in condition monitoring, diagnostics and related activities for machines. Published by ISO/TC 108 (Mechanical vibration, shock and condition monitoring), this second edition replaces the 2004 version and is intended as the authoritative source of terminology for users and manufacturers of condition monitoring systems. The standard is a reference (not a prescriptive procedure) and is intended to be cited by other condition monitoring and diagnostics documents.
Key topics
ISO 13372:2012 organizes and defines terminology across the lifecycle of machine condition monitoring and diagnostic practice. Major topic areas include:
- General terms (e.g., breakdown maintenance, condition-based maintenance, condition monitoring)
- Machine characteristics and machine system definitions
- Operation and maintenance vocabulary
- Faults and failures (clear distinction between fault = state and failure = event)
- Data collection and data acquisition (measurement terminology)
- Data characteristics, data processing and signal processing terms
- Analysis, diagnostics (examination of symptoms and syndromes) and prognostics (prediction of future condition and residual life)
- Indices such as criticality and concepts like machinery health management and machinery health monitoring
Because ISO 13372 is a vocabulary, its technical “requirements” amount to consistent, unambiguous definitions that other standards, specifications, procurement documents and technical publications should reference.
Applications
ISO 13372:2012 is practical for:
- Reliability, maintenance and condition monitoring engineers who need consistent definitions for machine condition monitoring, fault diagnostics and prognostics
- OEMs and suppliers of monitoring systems to align product documentation and specifications with standardized terminology
- Technical authors, trainers and educators preparing manuals, instruction booklets and course materials (reproduction of definitions is permitted for educational/implementation use under ISO conditions)
- Asset managers and maintenance planners integrating machinery health monitoring and condition-based maintenance strategies into operations
- Standards developers and certification bodies that require a common vocabulary across multiple documents
Related standards
- Prepared by ISO/TC 108 (Mechanical vibration, shock and condition monitoring).
- Intended to be cited by other ISO and IEC documents on vibration, signal processing, maintenance and condition monitoring.
Using ISO 13372:2012 helps eliminate ambiguity in documentation, improves interoperability between condition monitoring systems, and supports better decision-making in diagnostics, prognostics and maintenance strategy.
