Overview
ISO 13470:2012 - Trenchless applications of ductile iron pipe systems - specifies requirements, test methods and installation technologies for ductile iron pipes used in trenchless works to convey water and wastewater, with or without pressure. The Standard covers materials, dimensions, tolerances, mechanical properties and standard coatings for pipes, fittings and accessories (size range DN 80 to DN 2600). It sets performance requirements for components including joints, and addresses four main trenchless technologies: horizontal directional drilling (HDD), pipe bursting (PB), casing method (CM) and pipe jacking (PJ). Note: joint design and gasket shapes are outside the scope.
Key Topics and Requirements
- Scope and applicability: Service pipelines for water/wastewater; pressures are expressed as relative pressures in bar.
- Trenchless technologies covered: HDD, PB, CM, PJ - with DN applicability (e.g., HDD DN 100–1 200; PB DN 100–1 200; CM DN 80–2 600; PJ DN 250–2 600).
- Product requirements: Materials, dimensions, tolerances and mechanical properties for ductile iron pipes, fittings and accessories.
- Coatings and linings: Requirements for standard external and internal coatings and polyethylene sleeving used in site application.
- Joint and joint protection: Performance requirements for joints and methods to protect joints during pulling/pushing operations (joint design/gasket shapes excluded).
- Performance testing: Prescribed test methods including pulling force resistance and pushing force resistance measurements to verify installation loads.
- Installation procedures: Detailed laying procedures for pulling and pushing methods, site pressure testing and required safety procedures.
Applications and Who Uses the Standard
ISO 13470:2012 is intended for practical use in:
- Pipeline designers and consulting engineers specifying trenchless ductile iron systems for potable water, wastewater and sewer projects.
- Manufacturers and foundries producing ductile iron pipes, fittings and accessories to ensure conformity with material, dimensional and coating requirements.
- Contractors and installers performing HDD, pipe bursting, casing and pipe jacking operations who must validate allowable pulling/pushing forces and protect joints during installation.
- Utilities, municipal authorities and asset owners planning trenchless rehabilitation or new installations for road and river crossings, congested urban areas or environmentally sensitive sites.
- Test laboratories and inspectors performing the mechanical and installation-related tests required by the Standard.
