Abstract
Overview
ISO 13591:1997 - "Small craft - Portable fuel systems for outboard motors" defines safety, design and test requirements for portable fuel systems (portable fuel tanks, vents, filler caps, fuel connectors and hoses) intended for outboard motors on small craft up to 24 m hull length. The standard applies to systems with a rated capacity of 27 L or less and excludes pressurized fuel systems. It was prepared by ISO/TC 188 (Small craft) and includes informative annexes on owner instructions and bibliography.
Key Topics and Requirements
- Scope & definitions: Covers flammable liquids (flash point < 60 °C, Reid vapour pressure < 280 kPa at 38 °C) and defines portable fuel tanks and systems.
- Design & materials:
- Tanks must allow one-handed carrying, discourage stacking and provide ≥5% ullage at 20 °C.
- Tanks must be red and marked with fuel-type and fire-risk symbols.
- Materials arranged to minimize galvanic corrosion; plastics/elastomers require UV inhibitors.
- Filler neck diameters: 21.5–23.5 mm for unleaded petrol; >30 mm for other fuels.
- No solder with melting point
