ISO 13734;2013 specifies requirements and test methods for organic compounds suitable for odorization of natural gas and natural gas substitutes for public gas supply, hereafter referred to as odorants.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 13734:2013 specifies requirements and test methods for organic compounds used as odorants for natural gas and natural-gas substitutes in the public gas supply. The standard defines what makes an effective odorant, sets compositional and physical-property limits, and describes laboratory tests and handling documentation needed for type approval, quality control and safe transport.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope: Organic odorants for natural gas odorization; safety-focused detection by smell at low concentrations (commonly detectable at 20% of the LFL).
- Composition: Declared chemical product mass fraction ≥ 95%; for sulfur-containing odorants, sulfides or secondary/tertiary mercaptans ≥ 80%. Manufacturers must declare composition and shelf-life stability.
- Physical limits:
- Cloud point of undried odorant: below −30 °C.
- Boiling points of components: ≤ 130 °C.
- Evaporation residue: **
