ISO 13899-2:2005 specifies a method for the determination of the niobium content in steel by means of inductively coupled plasma emission spectrometry. This method is applicable to niobium contents between 0,005 and 5 % (mass fraction).
Abstract
Overview
ISO 13899-2:2005 specifies a standardized laboratory method for the determination of niobium (Nb) content in alloyed steel using inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES / ICP-ES). The procedure is applicable to Nb mass fractions from 0.005 % to 5 %. It defines sample dissolution, calibration, instrumental performance checks and result expression to ensure accurate and reproducible Nb measurements in steel.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and range: Applicable for Nb contents between 0.005–5 % (mass fraction).
- Sample preparation: Dissolution of steel using a mixture of HF, HCl and HNO3, followed by fuming with a phosphoric/perchloric acid mixture; final dilution, filtration and addition of an internal standard (optional).
- Calibration strategy: Close matrix matching and bracketing of Nb concentration around the expected sample level to compensate for matrix and spectral interferences.
- Instrument requirements (ICP-ES):
- Nebulizer and spray system resistant to hydrofluoric acid (PTFE or HF-resistant plastics).
- Spectral bandwidth (resolution) for chosen lines:
