ISO 1434:2016 specifies two methods for the determination of the amount of bale coating present on the outside wrapper sheets of bales of natural rubber: - ashing method; - brushing or scraping method. The ashing method is the preferred method.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 1434:2016 specifies standardized procedures to determine the amount of bale coating present on the outer wrapper sheets of natural rubber bales. The standard provides two validated methods - the ashing (calcination) method and the brushing or scraping method, with the ashing method identified as the preferred technique for reliable quantification. This document is intended for laboratories, producers and buyers involved in natural rubber quality control and commercial inspection.
Key Topics
-
Sampling: Random selection of bale sides and extraction of three specimens (50 mm × 50 mm) from three contiguous sides of the bale. For calcination, specimen thickness must not exceed 4 mm. Proper handling and storage are emphasized to minimize loss of coating.
-
Ashing (preferred) method:
- Principle: convert the coating to ash and determine mass by loss-on-ignition procedures.
- Typical apparatus from the standard: specimen punch, silica or porcelain crucible with lid, muffle furnace with controlled air circulation, Bunsen burner, desiccator and a balance accurate to 1 mg.
- Key steps: pre-calcine specimen in ash-free filter paper (pre-calcination at ~300 °C for 1 h), incinerate in a muffle furnace at about 550 °C until carbonaceous material is removed, cool in a desiccator and weigh repeatedly until mass is constant.
- Notes: ashing is unsuitable for some coating materials (e.g., those containing carbonates or thermally sensitive organic compounds) which may be altered by the calcination process.
-
Brushing or scraping method:
- Mechanically remove coating with a wire brush or careful scraping without damaging the rubber substrate and determine coating mass by difference.
- Faster but not suitable for rubbers with surface holes or where coating has penetrated the surface.
-
Expression of results: Coating is reported in grams per kilogram of rubber (g/kg). Individual specimen results are averaged; the standard recommends a tolerance of ±5% for the final value.
Applications
- Quality control of natural rubber bales during production, storage and shipment.
- Verification for commercial acceptance and compliance with packing/quality guidelines (e.g., limits on solid coating per bale).
- Laboratory testing where accurate, repeatable measurement of bale wrapper coating is required for trade disputes or supplier verification.

- ISO 3951-2 - Sampling procedures for lot-by-lot inspection by measurement (referenced for sampling plans)
- ISO 248-1 and ISO 1629 - General rubber testing and nomenclature
Practical value: ISO 1434:2016 gives laboratories a repeatable, auditable method for coating quantification. Choosing the appropriate method (ashing vs brushing/scraping) and following the sampling requirements are essential to obtaining representative, defensible results for quality assurance and trade purposes.
