Insulation layer or thermostatically controlled surround, balance (±0.1 g)

Sampling: Follow ISO 14422 for sampling; typical required paste per specimen ~150–200 g.

Conditioning: Paste, cylinder and accessories are thermostatted for 2–3 h at the agreed test temperature before compaction.

Compaction procedure:

Transfer paste to cylinder, protect with insulation
Lower piston and apply 100 impacts at ~1 impact/s
Target specimen height after compaction: 50 ± 5 mm; if outside this range, repeat using adjusted sample mass

Apparent density calculation:

ρ = m / (π · r^2 · h) where m = mass (g), r = inner radius (cm), h = height (cm)
Round result to nearest 0.001 g·cm⁻³

Precision (from interlaboratory study per ISO 5725-2):

Repeatability (r) = 0.023 g·cm⁻³
Reproducibility (R) = 0.042 g·cm⁻³

Reporting: Include reference to ISO 14427:2004, sample ID, test temperature, apparent density result, date, and any unusual features or deviations.
