This document specifies requirements and gives recommendations for the design, installation, testing, maintenance and safety of gaseous firefighting systems in buildings, plants or other structures, and the characteristics of the various extinguishants and types of fire for which they are a suitable extinguishing medium. It covers total flooding systems primarily related to buildings, plants and other specific applications, utilizing electrically non-conducting gaseous fire extinguishants that do not leave a residue after discharge and for which there are sufficient data currently available to enable validation of performance and safety characteristics by an appropriate independent authority. This document does not apply to explosion suppression. This document is not intended to indicate approval of the extinguishants listed therein by the appropriate authorities, as other extinguishants can be equally acceptable. CO2 is not included as it is covered by other International Standards. This document applies to the extinguishants listed in Table 1. It is essential that it be used in conjunction with the separate parts of the ISO 14520 series for specific extinguishants, as cited in Table 1.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 14520-1:2023 - Gaseous fire‑extinguishing systems - Physical properties and system design - Part 1: General requirements - establishes general requirements and recommendations for the design, installation, testing, maintenance and safety of gaseous firefighting systems. The standard focuses on total flooding systems using electrically non‑conducting gaseous extinguishants that leave no residue and for which validated performance and safety data exist. It excludes explosion suppression and does not cover CO2 (which is addressed in other standards). ISO 14520-1:2023 must be used together with the specific parts of the ISO 14520 series for individual extinguishants (see Table 1 in the standard).
Key topics and technical requirements
The standard covers the full lifecycle of gaseous fire‑extinguishing systems with emphasis on practical, safety‑critical elements:
- Scope & limitations - applicability to total flooding in buildings, plants and specific enclosures; list of covered extinguishants (Table 1).
- Safety requirements - personnel hazard assessment, occupiable vs unoccupiable areas, safety precautions, electrical hazards and electrostatic discharge control.
- System design - extinguishant supply, container arrangement, storage containers, piping, fittings, supports, valves and nozzles.
- Distribution and hydraulics - system flow calculations, friction loss, pressure drop, elevation change, balanced vs unbalanced systems, and liquefied‑gas specifics.
- Extinguishant performance - concentration requirements for flame extinguishment and inerting, total flooding quantity, duration of protection and altitude adjustment.
- Detection, actuation & control - automatic detection, operating devices, control equipment, alarms, hold switches and remote monitoring.
- Commissioning & acceptance testing - enclosure checks, mechanical and electrical reviews, functional tests and documentation.
- Inspection, maintenance, testing & training - regular inspection regimes, container checks, system maintenance and user training.
Practical applications and who uses this standard
ISO 14520-1:2023 is used by professionals involved in design, verification and operation of gaseous suppression systems:
- Fire protection engineers and system designers
- Installation contractors and commissioning agents
- Facility managers for data centers, server rooms, telecommunication facilities, archives, control rooms and industrial plants
- Safety officers, inspectors, certifying authorities and insurers
- Standards bodies referencing consistent safety and performance criteria
This standard helps ensure reliable total‑flooding fire protection using clean gaseous extinguishants while addressing human safety, system performance and regulatory compliance.
Related standards
- Other parts of the ISO 14520 series (for requirements specific to each extinguishant) - ISO 14520-1:2023 must be used in conjunction with these.
- CO2 systems are covered by separate international standards and are not included in this document.
