Overview
ISO 14530-3:1999 specifies requirements for selected unsaturated‑polyester powder moulding compounds (UP‑PMCs) and for compression‑ or injection‑moulded test specimens produced from them. The part is limited to UP‑PMC formulations whose composition and properties are significantly different and to those of general technical or economic importance. Test methods and test conditions are selected from ISO 14530‑2, and compound type designation follows ISO 14530‑1.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope and classification
- Applies only to selected UP‑PMC types as designated by the ISO 14530‑1 system.
- Test specimens are produced by compression or injection moulding.
- Property groups covered
- Rheological and processing properties - no universal limits; to be agreed between interested parties (essential for practical use).
- Mechanical properties - e.g., stress at break, flexural strength, Charpy impact (unnotched and notched). Tabled minimum values are provided for selected compound types.
- Thermal properties - temperature of deflection under specified loads (T1.8, T8.0) and flammability (glow‑bar classification).
- Electrical properties - dissipation factor (tan δ), volume and surface resistivity, proof tracking index (PTI).
- Other properties - water absorption at 24 h, plus optional data such as cure time, particle size and moisture content if required by agreement.
- Test data and tolerances
- Property values in the standard are mean values from a set of test specimens.
- Individual results for certain mechanical properties must be within ±10% of the mean; thermal results within ±5 °C.
- Reference to test methods
- Test methods and specimen preparation are those given in ISO 14530‑2; terminology per ISO 472.
Applications and users
- Who uses this standard
- Material manufacturers and compounders specifying UP‑PMCs.
- Moulding processors (compression and injection) and mould design engineers.
- Quality assurance/testing laboratories and procurement/specification teams.
- Product designers and OEMs requiring consistent mechanical, thermal and electrical performance.
- Practical applications
- Specifying UP‑PMC grades for electrical components, insulating parts, structural mouldings and other industrial applications where defined mechanical, thermal and electrical performance is required.
- Comparing supplier materials and ensuring compliance with agreed test conditions and performance criteria.
