This document specifies a method of instrumented Charpy V-notch pendulum impact testing on metallic materials and the requirements concerning the measurement and recording equipment. With respect to the Charpy pendulum impact test described in ISO 148-1, this test provides further information on the fracture behaviour of the product under impact testing conditions. The results of instrumented Charpy test analyses are not directly transferable to structures or components and shall not be directly used in design calculations or safety assessments. NOTE General information about instrumented impact testing can be found in References [1] to [5].
Abstract
Overview
ISO 14556:2023 - Metallic materials - Charpy V-notch pendulum impact test - Instrumented test method - specifies an instrumented Charpy V-notch test used to record force, displacement and energy during pendulum impact testing of metallic materials. Building on the Charpy test method in ISO 148-1 and the machine verification in ISO 148-2, ISO 14556:2023 defines instrumentation, measurement, calibration and data-analysis requirements so users can extract detailed fracture-behaviour information from force‑displacement curves. The standard is explicit that instrumented Charpy results are for material behaviour characterization and are not directly transferable to component design or safety calculations.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and principle: Measures impact force vs. bending displacement; area under the force‑displacement curve gives absorbed energy (W_t).
- Characteristic values defined: General yield force (F_gy), maximum force (F_m), unstable crack initiation (F_iu), crack arrest force (F_a), corresponding displacements (s_gy, s_m, s_iu, s_a) and partial energies (W_m, W_iu, W_a).
- Testing machine: Uses a pendulum impact tester in accordance with ISO 148-2; instrumentation must allow comparison between instrumented energy (W_t) and machine indicated energy (K_V).
- Instrumentation & calibration:
- Force transducers often implemented using strain gauges on the striker (full‑bridge arrangements); compensating gauges must not be placed on vibrating parts.
- Measurement systems shall be metrologically traceable to national/international standards.
- Dynamic performance: response ≥ 100 kHz (corresponding to signal rise time ≤ 3.5 μs).
- If W_t and K_V deviate by more than the larger of 10% of K_V or 2 J, check friction, calibration, software and consider the documented “dynamic force adjustment.”
- Annexes and special cases: Examples of instrumented strikers (Annex A), calibration support blocks (Annex B), methods for estimating ductile fracture proportion (Annex C), and rules for miniature test pieces (Annex D, normative).
Practical applications and users
ISO 14556:2023 is used for:
- Metallurgical research into fracture mechanisms and transition behaviour
- Materials qualification and comparative testing of steels and other metals
- Quality control laboratories requiring detailed impact-fracture data
- Test equipment manufacturers and calibration providers specifying instrumented strikers and data acquisition
- Standards committees and technical specialists developing material data sets
Note: Instrumented Charpy data are valuable for understanding fracture processes (e.g., crack initiation/arrest) but should not be used directly for structural design or safety assessments.
