Overview
ISO 14582:2013 specifies hexalobular socket countersunk head screws, high head - a variant of countersunk fasteners with an increased head height to provide full loadability. The standard covers bolts and screws, product grade A, with thread diameters M3 up to M10 and property classes 4.8, 8.8 and 10.9. It defines head geometry, gauge dimensions for head control, marking and designation, and references the applicable mechanical and dimensional requirements.
Key topics
- Scope and intent: Applies to high-head hexalobular (Torx-like) internal drive countersunk screws designed for full mechanical load in accordance with ISO 898-1.
- Sizes and property classes: Threads M3–M10; property classes 4.8, 8.8, 10.9.
- Head geometry and gauging: Detailed dimensions, tolerances and a flushness gauge are given to control countersunk head form and assembly fit. Note: because of increased head height, these screws are not fully interchangeable with standard ISO countersunk screws and require a deeper countersink than ISO 15065 specifies.
- Material and tolerances: Steel material, thread tolerance class 6g, and product grade A; surface discontinuity limits and acceptance inspections are referenced.
- Mechanical and quality requirements: Mechanical properties and marking follow ISO 898-1; acceptance procedure per ISO 3269.
- Drive feature and finishes: Hexalobular socket requirements per ISO 10664; coating/finish guidance references ISO 4042 (electroplating), ISO 10683 (zinc flake) and ISO 10684 (hot-dip galvanizing).
- Designation example: Countersunk head screw ISO 14582 - M10 × 40 – 10.9
Applications
ISO 14582 is used where a countersunk head with internal hexalobular drive is required but with a higher head for full clamping load. Typical uses include:
- Specification by designers and engineers when selecting fasteners for flush-mounted assemblies that still require full load capacity.
- Procurement and purchasing to ensure correct thread size (M3–M10) and property class are ordered.
- Quality control and inspection (gauging head dimensions, thread and mechanical properties) during production and incoming inspection.
- Fastener manufacturers and OEMs who need standardized dimensions and marking for interchangeability and traceability.
