ISO 14624-4:2003 specifies a test method for determining the flammability of aerospace materials in pressurized gaseous oxygen (GOX) and oxygen-enriched environments, at ambient temperature. This method may also be used to provide supplementary information by testing at pressures other than the intended use pressure. The standard pressure range for this test method is from ambient to 69 000 kPa.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 14624-4:2003 - "Space systems - Safety and compatibility of materials - Part 4" - specifies a standardized test method to determine the upward flammability of aerospace materials in pressurized gaseous oxygen (GOX) or oxygen‑enriched environments at ambient temperature. The method covers tests at pressures from ambient up to 69 000 kPa, and defines specimen preparation, ignition, measurement and reporting to support safe material selection for space systems where oxygen atmospheres present an elevated fire hazard.
Key topics and requirements
- Test principle: A vertically mounted specimen is ignited at its lower end in a high‑pressure chamber; the post‑test burn length for at least 10 specimens is recorded.
- Flammability criterion: A material is classed as flammable at a specific pressure if at least one specimen burns more than 150 mm.
- Pressure range & test points: Standard test pressures range from 100 kPa to 69 000 kPa (listed in the standard). Tests may be run at the intended use pressure or supplementary pressures for comparison.
- Specimen requirements: Standard rods are 305 mm long × 3.2 mm diameter; non‑standard geometries are allowed if documented and approved.
- Ignition system: Uses a promoter (aluminium or magnesium releasing ≥ 3.0 kJ), an ignitor wire (Al–Pd or Ni–Cr), and a power supply capable of 40 A (RMS) at 50 V.
- Test equipment: High‑pressure chamber with volume sufficient that no more than 5% of available oxygen is consumed during test; calibrated measuring devices required.
- Accuracy & reporting: Tolerances include pressure ±1%, specimen dimensions ±5%, burn length ±10 mm. Test reports must include specimen ID, test conditions and burn length. Non‑standard tests must be noted.
- Safety & GLP: Tests produce smoke/toxic gases and involve oxygen hazards - appropriate safety controls are mandatory. Test facilities should follow good laboratory practice (GLP), periodic proficiency testing, and maintain records (15 years recommended).
Applications and users
- Material selection and qualification for spacecraft components exposed to GOX or oxygen‑enriched atmospheres (e.g., life‑support systems, propulsion interfaces, cargo bays).
- Aerospace materials engineers, safety and compatibility assessors, test laboratories, certification authorities, and procurement teams requiring objective flammability data for risk assessment and design compliance.
- Accredited laboratories performing flight‑critical testing and aerospace OEMs developing oxygen‑system hardware.
Related standards
- Other parts of ISO 14624 (Parts 1–7) covering additional flammability, offgassing, reactivity and permeability tests.
- ISO/IEC 17025, ISO/IEC Guide 43‑1 and Guide 58 referenced for laboratory competence, proficiency testing and accreditation guidance.
