Overview - ISO 14627:2012 (silicon nitride fracture resistance by IF)
ISO 14627:2012 specifies an indentation fracture (IF) test method for determining the fracture resistance of monolithic silicon nitride materials used for rolling bearing balls at room temperature. Intended for material comparison and quality assurance, the standard defines the Vickers indentation procedure (per ISO 26602) to produce and measure indentation cracks and calculate an IF-based fracture resistance value (KI,IFR). It is not a substitute for conventional fracture toughness (KIc) tests - KI,IFR estimates resistance to crack initiation/extension from localized damage.
