This document specifies a method for determining the film hardness by pushing pencils of known hardness over the film. The test can be performed on a single coating of a paint, varnish or related product, or on the upper layer of a multi-coat system. This rapid test has not been found to be useful in comparing the pencil hardness of different coatings. It is more useful in providing relative ratings for a series of coated panels exhibiting significant differences in pencil hardness. The method is applicable only to smooth surfaces.

Specimen preparation: Use representative sampling (ISO 15528), standard panels and substrates (ISO 1514), and measure dry film thickness per ISO 2808.

Procedure essentials:

Position instrument horizontally, apply pencil and push at constant slow speed.
Inspect after 30 s (clean pencil fragments with an inert solvent if required).
Repeat to bracket the hardness; perform duplicate tests (discard and repeat if results differ by more than one hardness unit).

Defect types: Plastic deformation (indentation), cohesive fracture (visible scratch with material removed), or combination.

Limitations: Applicable only to smooth surfaces; not suitable for absolute comparisons across different coating types. No precision data are provided in the standard.
