1.1 This International Standard specifies the procedure for determining the relative resistance of stainless steels and nickel-base alloys to stress corrosion cracking in a sodium chloride drop evaporation system. 1.2 The method results in a threshold stress to fracture, the magnitude of which can be used to rank the relative performance of different alloys for this environment.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 15324:2000 - "Corrosion of metals and alloys - Evaluation of stress corrosion cracking by the drop evaporation test" specifies a standardized laboratory method to rank the resistance of stainless steels and nickel‑base alloys to stress corrosion cracking (SCC) in a sodium chloride drop‑evaporation environment. The test produces a threshold stress to fracture (no fracture observed in 500 h) that can be used to compare alloy performance under severe wet/dry salt concentration and elevated temperature conditions.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Test principle: A dilute NaCl solution is dripped onto a horizontally mounted, resistance‑heated tensile specimen under uniaxial load; wetting/drying and evaporation concentrate salt and can induce SCC.
- Specimen geometry & preparation:
- Gauge length: 10 mm; gauge diameter: 1.8 mm (circular cross section).
- Surface finish: fine ground (Ra
