ISO 15490:2008 specifies the test method for determining the tensile strength under uniaxial loading of monolithic fine ceramics and whisker or particulate-reinforced ceramic composites at room temperature. This test method, in which parasitic bending is minimized, may be used for material development, material comparison, quality assurance, characterization and design data generation.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 15490:2008 - Fine ceramics (advanced ceramics, advanced technical ceramics) - Test method for tensile strength of monolithic ceramics at room temperature - defines a standardized procedure to determine the uniaxial tensile strength of monolithic fine ceramics and whisker/particulate‑reinforced ceramic composites at room temperature. The method minimizes parasitic bending and is intended for material development, comparison, quality assurance, characterization and generation of design data.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Test principle: Apply uniaxial tensile load to a specimen until fracture to determine maximum tensile stress (tensile strength).
- Specimen geometry & preparation:
- Gauge-section cross‑section must be uniform with dimensional accuracy better than ±0.5%.
- Surface finish in the gauge section recommended Ra 0.2–0.4 µm (longitudinal).
- Measure gauge dimensions at ≥3 cross‑sections; diameter/thickness tolerance 0.02 mm.
- Alignment and bending control:
- Verify axial alignment using 3–4 strain gauges; misalignment deviation < 0.035 rad (~2°).
- Percent bending must not exceed 7.5% for individual specimen verification, 5% if using a permanent “dummy” strain‑gauged specimen.
- Test modes and rates:
- Displacement control common - crosshead speeds > 0.00833 mm/s (0.5 mm/min) recommended.
- Force control - stress rates > 20 MPa/s suggested.
- Aim for final fracture within **
