ISO 15614-3:2008 specifies how a preliminary welding procedure specification (pWPS) for production and repair welding of non-alloyed and low-alloyed cast irons is qualified by fusion welding procedure tests. ISO 15614-3:2008 defines the conditions for execution of the welding procedure tests and the range of qualification for welding procedures for all practical welding operations within the range of a defined list of variables. ISO 15614-3:2008 is applicable to all new welding procedures. However, it does not invalidate previous welding procedure tests made to former national standards or specifications. Where additional tests have to be carried out to make the qualification technically equivalent, it is only necessary to do the additional tests on a test piece made in accordance with ISO 15614-3:2008. Additional tests may be required by application standards. ISO 15614-3:2008 is applicable to welding non-alloyed and low-alloyed grey cast iron castings according to: EN 1561; EN 1562; EN 1563; and EN 1564. The principles of ISO 15614-3:2008 are also applicable for welding cast iron to steel or to other unalloyed and low-alloyed cast iron materials.
Abstract
Overview - ISO 15614-3:2008 (Fusion welding of cast irons)
ISO 15614-3:2008 specifies how a preliminary welding procedure specification (pWPS) for production and repair welding of non‑alloyed and low‑alloyed cast irons is qualified by fusion welding procedure tests. It defines test-piece preparation, execution of welding procedure tests, required examinations (non‑destructive and destructive), acceptance criteria and the range of qualification for practical welding operations. The standard applies to grey, malleable, spheroidal graphite and austempered ductile cast irons (EN 1561, EN 1562, EN 1563, EN 1564) and can be applied when welding cast iron to steel or other similar cast irons.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Qualification of pWPS: How a pWPS is validated by welding procedure tests and which records are required (welding procedure qualification record).
- Test-piece design and welding: Shape, dimensions and preparation of test pieces and representation of production/joint geometry (see Clause 7).
- Welding processes covered: Common fusion processes per ISO 4063 (examples include SMAW/MMA, GMAW/MIG/MAG, GTAW/TIG, plasma, submerged arc and oxy‑fuel welding).
- Examination and testing:
- Non‑destructive testing (NDT) before specimen extraction - visual inspection (EN 970) and penetrant testing (EN 571‑1) are required.
- Destructive testing - macroscopic/microscopic examination and tensile tests; additional tests (impact, hardness, radiography, corrosion) may be required by application standards.
- Range of qualification: Rules on how qualified parameters (materials, thicknesses, positions, processes and consumables) may be extended within agreed limits (Clause 9).
- Traceability and records: Procedures for documenting test results and the welder/welding operator qualification obtained through successful procedure testing.
Practical applications - who uses it and why
- Welding engineers and procedure developers use ISO 15614-3:2008 to produce qualified, auditable welding procedures for cast iron components.
- Foundries, fabricators and repair shops perform tests and produce pWPS/PQR documentation to ensure consistent, reliable fusion welding and to meet procurement or regulatory requirements.
- Inspection bodies, quality managers and third‑party certifiers use the standard to verify that welding procedure tests, NDT and destructive tests meet industry practice.
- Useful for repair welding of castings in heavy industry (pumps, gear housings, engine blocks, piping fittings) where cast iron is common.
