This document defines the most important quantities that characterize an energy-dispersive X‑ray spectrometer consisting of a semiconductor detector, a pre-amplifier and a signal-processing unit as the essential parts. This document is only applicable to spectrometers with semiconductor detectors operating on the principle of solid-state ionization. This document specifies minimum requirements and how relevant instrumental performance parameters are to be checked for such spectrometers attached to a scanning electron microscope (SEM) or an electron probe microanalyser (EPMA). The procedure used for the actual analysis is outlined in ISO 22309[2] and ASTM E1508[3] and is outside the scope of this document.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 15632:2021 - "Microbeam analysis - Selected instrumental performance parameters for the specification and checking of energy‑dispersive X‑ray spectrometers (EDS) for use with a scanning electron microscope (SEM) or an electron probe microanalyser (EPMA)" - defines the essential performance quantities and minimum requirements for energy‑dispersive X‑ray spectrometers (EDS) that use semiconductor detectors operating on the solid‑state ionization principle. This third edition (2021) updates criteria for modern detector technologies (e.g., silicon drift detectors (SDD) replacing Si‑Li) and provides standardized checks to compare and validate spectrometer performance attached to SEMs or EPMAs.
Key topics and requirements
The standard covers the following technical topics and measurement parameters:
- General detector description: required disclosure of detector type, sensor thickness, net active sensor area, and window type (beryllium, thin‑film, windowless).
- Energy resolution: measured as full width at half maximum (FWHM) of characteristic lines (e.g., Mn Kα) and low‑energy lines; includes Annex A for FWHM measurement procedures.
- Count rates and timing: definitions and distinctions between input count rate (ICR), output count rate (OCR), real time, live time, and dead time (and dead‑time fraction).
- Peak‑to‑background ratio: standardized ways to assess signal quality and detection limits.
- Instrumental detection efficiency: energy dependence of detector efficiency and measurement guidance (Annex B describes L/K ratio measurements).
- Stability and artefacts: procedures for checking energy scale stability, resolution over time, pile‑up effects, and periodic performance checks.
- Measurement conditions: all specifications are tied to the count rate and geometry used during measurement; manufacturers must state conditions under which specifications apply.
Note: ISO 15632 specifies how to check instrument parameters; the actual analytical procedures (sample prep, quantification) are outside its scope.
Applications
ISO 15632 is practical for ensuring reliable EDS performance in contexts where microbeam chemical analysis is critical:
- Materials characterization (metals, ceramics, thin films)
- Failure analysis and forensics in electronics and manufacturing
- Quality control in research labs and production facilities
- Calibration and performance qualification of SEM/EPMA EDS systems
Using ISO 15632 helps laboratories meet traceability and quality requirements (e.g., ISO/IEC 17025) by standardizing EDS verification and enabling objective comparison of detector designs (SDD vs Si‑Li).
Who should use this standard?
- SEM/EPMA instrument manufacturers and detector vendors
- Analytical laboratory managers and technicians performing EDS
- Metrology and accreditation bodies validating EDS performance
- Engineers and researchers selecting spectrometers for light‑element or high‑count‑rate applications
