ISO 15792-3:2011 specifies the preparation and assessment of fillet weld test pieces for conformity assessment of positional usability and root penetration requirements for consumables classification standards for welding non-alloy and fine grain steels, low alloy steels, stainless steels, and nickel base alloys. ISO 15792-3:2011 does not specify acceptance requirements.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 15792-3:2011 defines test methods for preparing and assessing fillet weld test pieces used in the classification of welding consumables. The standard covers the preparation, welding conditions, macrosectioning and measurement techniques used to evaluate positional usability (positional capacity) and root penetration for consumables applied to non-alloy and fine grain steels, low alloy steels, stainless steels and nickel base alloys. Note: this part of ISO 15792 does not specify acceptance criteria - it describes test procedures for conformity assessment to the relevant consumable classification standard.
Key Topics
- Test piece preparation: web and flange assembly, tack welding, intimate contact for the full joint length. If not otherwise specified in the classification standard, typical dimensions include web thickness t = 10–12 mm, flange width w ≥ 75 mm and length l ≥ 300 mm.
- Welding conditions and position: welding position is defined in ISO 6947 and by the consumable classification standard. Single-pass fillet welds are deposited on one side (or both sides if required by the classification standard). Minimum assembly temperature is 5 °C.
- Consumable handling: covered electrode consumption to permissible stub length (50 mm) and continuous welding for wire, tubular cored electrodes and wires; specific allowances for electrodes > 450 mm intended for gravity welding are included.
- Examination and measurement: throat thickness, fillet leg lengths, convexity/concavity and theoretical throat are measured on polished and etched macrosections to the nearest 0.5 mm. Macrosections are typically ~25 mm wide and taken at specified locations depending on electrode type.
- Fracture and bending tests: procedures and optional measures to facilitate fracture through the fillet throat (reinforcing welds, offset web, notching, cooling below 0 °C) are described when required by the classification standard.
- Test reporting: required report elements include consumable ID (trade name, heat/lot number), base metal, welding parameters (process, current, polarity, wire feed, arc voltage, travel speed, shielding gas, preheat/interpass), deviations, and measured results (fillet leg lengths, throat, root penetration, visual exam, fracture defects).
Applications
ISO 15792-3:2011 is used by:
- Welding consumable manufacturers to qualify and classify product positional capability and root penetration characteristics.
- Test laboratories and quality departments performing conformity assessment of consumables to classification standards.
- Fabricators and specification authors seeking consistent test methods for fillet weld evaluation in procurement and quality control.
The standard supports reproducible evaluation of fillet weld geometry and root condition, aiding reliable consumable selection and consistent quality assurance.
