This document specifies mechanical requirements for sensors and in-dummy data acquisition systems (DAS) of the WorldSID 50th percentile side-impact dummy, a standardized anthropomorphic dummy for near-side-impact tests of road vehicles.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 15830-3:2022 specifies the mechanical requirements for sensors and in-dummy data acquisition systems (DAS) used in the WorldSID 50th percentile male side‑impact dummy. As Part 3 of the ISO 15830 series, it documents permissible sensor locations, mounting geometry, mass targets and mechanical interfaces for electronic subsystems used in near‑side vehicle impact testing. The standard is intended for regulatory, consumer information and research use together with the other ISO 15830 parts.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Permissible sensors and locations: The standard lists allowable sensor types (e.g., triaxial linear accelerometers, angular rate/angular accelerometers, dual‑axis tilt sensors, multidimensional rib deflection systems, various load cells and temperature loggers) and their mounting locations on the WorldSID dummy.
- Mechanical specifications and mass targets: Table 1 defines mechanical mounting details and recommended sensor masses and minimum channel counts. If sensors are omitted, structural or mass replacements must be fitted per ISO 15830-4.
- Sensor performance and sign convention: All installed sensors must comply with capacities in Annex B and follow SAE J1733 sign conventions and SAE J2570 performance specifications.
- DAS mechanical requirements: In‑dummy DAS assemblies (thorax, pelvis, upper leg) have defined CAD targets for center of gravity and mass moments of inertia to ensure correct mass distribution.
- Mounting geometry and neutral axes: Accelerometer neutral‑axis locations and specific mount interfaces (e.g., universal neck load cell geometry) are specified to ensure consistent biomechanical measurement.
- Supporting information: Annex A covers sensor locations and handling; Annex B contains sensor capacities.
Practical applications
ISO 15830-3 is used to:
- Ensure consistent instrumentation and mechanical integration for WorldSID dummies in side‑impact tests.
- Guide crash test laboratories and OEMs in selecting and mounting sensors and in‑dummy DAS to meet regulatory and research requirements.
- Support conformity of dummy instrumentation for regulatory certification, consumer crash rating programs, and biomechanical research.
Who should use this standard
- Vehicle safety test laboratories and technicians
- Dummy and instrumentation manufacturers
- Automotive OEM safety engineers
- Regulatory authorities and consumer information organizations
- Biomechanics and crashworthiness researchers
