ISO 15930-4:2003 specifies the use of the Portable Document Format (PDF) Version 1.4 for the dissemination of complete digital data, in a single exchange that contains all elements ready for final print reproduction. CMYK and spot-colour data are supported in any combination.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 15930-4:2003, titled Graphic technology - Prepress digital data exchange using PDF - Part 4 (PDF/X-1a:2003), defines a constrained use of PDF 1.4 for the reliable, single-file transmission of print-ready documents. It specifies how to package complete CMYK and spot colour printing data so the receiver can reproduce the intended printed result without additional files or workflow configuration - a “blind exchange.” The standard targets predictable, platform- and transport-independent exchange for final print reproduction.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Single-file complete exchange: All text, graphics, images and resources must be present inside one PDF; external dependencies are not permitted.
- Colour support: CMYK and spot colours in any combination; intended for final print reproduction as CMYK/spot data.
- PDF version and feature restrictions: Uses PDF 1.4 and defines a limited subset of PDF features. Newer PDF 1.4 features such as Transparency, JBIG2 and Referenced PDF are disallowed in PDF/X-1a:2003.
- Data structure and objects: Rules for vector/raster content, fonts, PostScript XObjects, bounding boxes and extended graphics state to ensure consistent rendering.
- Fonts and resources: Fonts must be embedded and appropriately specified so text renders identically at the print site.
- File identification and metadata: Clear identification of a PDF/X-1a file, plus recommended metadata and ICC profile usage for colour consistency.
- Other technical controls: Specifications cover data compression, trapping, annotations, alternate images, JavaScript/actions (restricted), the use of BX/EX operators and viewer preferences to avoid ambiguity in printing.
Practical applications and users
Who benefits:
- Prepress specialists and print service providers who need predictable print output.
- Graphic designers and agencies delivering final print-ready files to printers.
- RIP vendors, workflow and PDF/X software developers implementing import/export and validation tools.
- Publishers and packaging producers requiring strict control over colour and spot ink usage.
Common uses:
- Magazine, book and commercial printing jobs where blind exchange is required.
- Packaging and labels where spot colours and precise CMYK separations are mandatory.
- Archival and hand-off workflows where a single immutable file must contain all print-ready assets.
