ISO 15930-6:2003 specifies the use of the Portable Document Format (PDF) Version 1.4 for the dissemination of complete digital data, in a single exchange that contains all elements necessary for final print reproduction. Colour-managed, CMYK, Gray, RGB or spot colour data are supported.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 15930-6:2003 (PDF/X-3) defines a standardized method for the complete exchange of prepress printing data using PDF 1.4. It specifies a single-file, “blind” exchange that contains all elements necessary for final print reproduction and supports colour-managed workflows with CMYK, Gray, RGB and spot colours. The aim is predictable, platform- and transport-independent transfer of compound entities so a receiver can render the printed page as intended by the sender.
Key topics and technical requirements
- PDF version and scope: Uses Adobe Portable Document Format 1.4 and restricts certain PDF features to avoid ambiguity in prepress.
- Complete exchange: All resources required for final output must be embedded in a single PDF; no external references are permitted.
- Colour management: Supports ICC-based colour management (CMYK, RGB, Gray, spot colours) so files can be processed in colour-managed workflows.
- Disallowed features: Some PDF 1.4 features introduced after PDF 1.3 are explicitly disallowed in PDF/X-3:2003 (for example JBIG2, Transparency, and Referenced PDF).
- Technical areas covered (normative requirements and restrictions):
- Data structure and file specification
- Colour and ICC profile usage
- Fonts and glyph embedding
- Data compression and bounding boxes
- Trapping, annotations and non-print elements
- Extended graphics state, PostScript XObjects / PS operator
- Encryption, alternate images, actions/JavaScript, BX/EX operators
- Viewer preferences and metadata (see Annexes A & B)
- Conformance: Defines conformance levels and expectations for PDF/X writers and readers. A conforming reader must correctly process all files at the specified conformance level.
Applications
- Reliable exchange of print-ready documents between designers, agencies, prepress houses and printers.
- Submitting jobs to print service providers where colour fidelity and reproducibility are critical (commercial printing, packaging, publication).
- Implementing automated, predictable RIP and color-managed workflows in print production environments.
- Basis for PDF/X-capable software (writers, viewers, RIPs) to ensure interoperable prepress file exchange.
Who should use this standard
- Prepress and print production managers
- Graphic designers and publishers preparing final print deliverables
- Print service providers and contract printers
- Software developers building PDF/X-compliant tools (creators, validators, RIPs)
- QA and workflow engineers in colour-managed production environments
