ISO 15930-8:2010 specifies the use of the Portable Document Format (PDF) Version 1.6 for the dissemination of digital data intended for print, whereby all elements necessary for final print reproduction are either included or provision is made for unique identification of externally supplied graphical content or n‑colorant ICC profiles. Colour-managed, CMYK, gray, RGB or spot colour data are supported in any combination; as are PDF transparency and optional content. Files can be prepared for use with gray, RGB, CMYK and n-colorant printing characterizations.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 15930-8:2010 defines a PDF-based exchange format for the partial transfer of prepress printing data using PDF 1.6 (PDF/X-5). It enables colour-managed and conventional workflows where some elements required for final reproduction (for example high-resolution images or ICC profiles) can remain external to the main PDF file while still providing unambiguous identification and processing instructions. The standard supports CMYK, gray, RGB, spot colours, n‑colorant characterizations, PDF transparency and optional content.
Key topics and technical requirements
- PDF version: Uses Portable Document Format Version 1.6.
- Partial exchange: Allows graphical content and/or output-intent ICC profiles to be referenced externally rather than embedded in a single “complete” file.
- Conformance levels:
- PDF/X-5g - external graphical content (images, line art).
- PDF/X-5n - external ICC profiles for n‑colorant printing characterizations.
- PDF/X-5pg - external graphical content and external ICC profiles for gray/RGB/CMYK.
- Color support: Colour-managed workflows and conventional CMYK/spot workflows; files can be prepared for gray, RGB, CMYK and n‑colorant printing characterizations.
- Metadata and identification: The standard mandates metadata and identification mechanisms so external files and ICC profiles can be uniquely associated and validated during processing.
- Restrictions on external data: To avoid ambiguity, ISO 15930-8 specifies restrictions on how external content is referenced and processed, and requirements for renderers/readers to identify which conformance levels they support.
- Transparency & optional content: PDF transparency and optional content (layers) are permitted and handled within the constraints of the conformance level.
- Interoperability caution: Use of PDF/X-5 increases the need for pre-submission agreement between sender and receiver; PDF/X-4 (complete file) is recommended where external references offer no practical benefit.
Applications and who uses it
- Prepress and print service providers who need flexible workflows for:
- Late-stage compositing of advertising/editorial content
- Managing large or variable-resolution image assets without embedding them
- Supporting extended process colour sets (n‑colorant printing)
- Graphic designers and agencies that submit partial assets for publication
- RIP, viewer and workflow software developers implementing PDF/X readers and writers
- Publishers and newspapers that composite submissions from multiple contributors
Related standards
- Other parts of ISO 15930 (PDF/X family: PDF/X-1, PDF/X-3, PDF/X-4, PDF/X-4p)
- PDF 1.6 specification (Adobe)
- ICC profile specifications and colour-management standards
ISO 15930-8:2010 (PDF/X-5) enables scalable, colour-aware prepress workflows by formalizing safe, unambiguous use of external assets and n‑colorant characterizations while requiring metadata and processing rules for reliable exchange.
