ISO 15989:2004 specifies a method of measuring the contact angle of water droplets on corona-treated polymer film surfaces and subsequently determining the wetting tension of the film. The method is applicable to practically any polymer film. It is not applicable, however, if the surface of the film exhibits a chemical affinity for water.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 15989:2004 defines a standardized laboratory method for measuring the water-contact angle of corona-treated polymer films and converting that value into an estimated wetting tension (surface energy). The procedure covers droplet deposition, optical measurement and basic result interpretation for virtually any polymer film - except films whose surfaces chemically attract water (i.e., show intrinsic water affinity). ISO 15989 is used for process control, quality assurance and comparative testing of corona surface treatment on film and sheeting.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and applicability: Contact-angle measurement of corona-treated films; not applicable when the film surface has chemical affinity for water.
- Test liquid: Use distilled or ultra‑pure water (HPLC-grade) - contamination alters results; reagent-grade deionized water is less accurate.
- Specimens: Minimum strip ~25 mm × 300 mm; note machine direction when sampling; avoid touching test areas.
- Sampling: Recommended 10 readings per specimen; advance specimen between droplets to avoid previously wetted areas.
- Droplet transfer and size: Typical droplets ~1–2 µL (larger 5–8 µL possible but may introduce error). Transfer droplet from a microsyringe; do not squirt.
- Apparatus:
- Contact‑angle meter (goniometer) with appropriate optics and microsyringe.
- Droplet‑projection contact‑angle apparatus (user‑constructed alternative).
- Computer‑based image analysis systems for higher accuracy.
- Measurement techniques: Direct tangent/protractor, geometric methods using apex/three‑phase point, or image-dimension algorithms (per ASTM D724 / ASTM D5946). Measure within about 1 minute of droplet transfer.
- Calculation & interpretation: Compute average and standard deviation of measured angles; use the standard conversion chart (Table 1) to estimate wetting tension (e.g., a 70° contact angle ≈ 41 mN/m).
- Conditioning: Generally not required for routine QC. For interlaboratory comparisons, condition specimens (≈23 °C ±2 °C and 50 % ±5 % RH for ≥40 h).
- Precision: Interlaboratory data exist (see standard); instrument and operator biases should be assessed.
Applications and users
ISO 15989 is valuable for:
- Film manufacturers and converters controlling corona treatment effectiveness
- Packaging and printing converters checking surface wettability for inks, coatings and adhesives
- Quality assurance and production process control laboratories
- Independent test laboratories and research groups studying surface energy and adhesion of polymer films
