This document specifies the sampling procedures, transport conditions, storage and substrate used that can affect emissions of volatile organic compounds for three types of building products or furnishing: solid, liquid and combined. For individual products, the preparation of a test specimen for each type is specified.

Overview
ISO 16000-11:2024 - "Indoor air - Part 11" specifies standardized procedures for sampling, transport, storage and preparation of test specimens used to determine emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from building products and furnishings. It covers three product classes: solid, liquid and combined products, and provides practical guidance to ensure representative, reproducible VOC emission measurements in emission test chambers or cells.

- Preparation of test specimens: Dimensions depend on chamber size and test scenario; specimen preparation methods are prescribed in informative annexes for solid, liquid and combined products. Examples:
- Rolls: discard outer metre (or outer layer), sample from middle, and take specimen at least 50 cm from short-side edges.
- Secure underside to an inert substrate (glass, stainless steel or aluminium foil) or place specimens back-to-back; seal edges with low-emitting aluminium tape or frames to isolate surface emissions.
- Jointed products (tiles, laminates): assemble pieces to reflect the same proportion of joints as in use; do not use adhesive when assembling test specimen.
- Timing: Pack samples within 1 hour of sampling when applicable; record time between unpacking and specimen preparation.
- Cut-edge emissions: Specific preparation instructions for cut-edge testing are included.
