ISO 16409:2016 specifies requirements and test methods for performance criteria for manual interdental brushes with a round cross-section of the brush head and consisting of a wired stem with inserted filaments. It also specifies the accompanying information such as manufacturer's instructions for use and labelling of the packaging. Excluded are interdental brushes with a plastic core. ISO 16409:2016 is not applicable to powered interdental brushes, manual toothbrushes, dental floss, tapes, and strings and to interdental cleaners that do not include filaments.
Abstract
Overview - ISO 16409:2016 for manual interdental brushes
ISO 16409:2016 specifies performance requirements, test methods and accompanying information for manual interdental brushes with a round cross‑section brush head made from a wired stem with inserted filaments. The standard covers classification, dimensional sizing, mechanical performance (filament and stem retention, stem durability), sampling and test conditions, plus required manufacturer instructions and labelling. Excluded are interdental brushes with a plastic core, powered interdental brushes, toothbrushes, dental floss/tapes/strings and other cleaners without filaments.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope & classification
- Applies to hand‑powered interdental brushes; classifies as Type 1 (replaceable heads), Type 2 (permanent heads) and Type 3 (stem as handle).
- Brush size / passage hole diameter
- Sizes are defined by the minimum passage hole diameter; measuring plate covers 0.6–3.5 mm in 0.1 mm increments (hole tolerance –0.02/+0.02 mm).
- Procedure covers cylindrical and tapered brush heads; tapered brushes may show a one‑ or two‑number size range.
- Mechanical performance
- Filament retention: filaments shall not detach (test method specified).
- Stem retention: for Type 1 and Type 2 the stem must resist a removal force ≥ 15 N.
- Stem durability: stem must withstand 20 repeated bending cycles.
- Sampling & pass/fail
- Tests use dry brushes at (23 ± 5) °C and (50 ± 10) % RH.
- Eight samples per test; if one fails, test another eight. Two or more failures in 16 = product fail.
- Accompanying information
- Manufacturer’s instructions for use and packaging labelling are specified.
Practical applications - who uses ISO 16409:2016
- Manufacturers and product designers - to design and validate interdental brush geometry, stem construction and filament retention.
- Quality assurance teams & test laboratories - to perform standardized sampling and mechanical tests for product release and batch verification.
- Regulatory and procurement groups - to verify compliance with recognized dental product performance criteria.
- Dental professionals and researchers - to understand sizing, durability and performance expectations when recommending interdental brushes.
Related standards and context
- Normative reference: ISO 1942 (Dentistry - Vocabulary) for definitions.
- Developed by ISO/TC 106 (Dentistry), Subcommittee SC 7 (Oral care products).
- Second edition (2016) updated brush size (added size 8), sampling requirements and passage‑hole measurement clarifications.
